Track Athlete Tips, Tricks and Ideas

These practical ideas were developed while coaching track athletes. Test unfamiliar methods during training rather than introducing them for the first time on competition day.

Cold Water Before Racing

Warm up first, then experiment with a brief cold shower followed by warmer water. One approach is about five cold bursts lasting 5–10 seconds each. Some athletes report feeling lighter and sharper afterwards, particularly on hot days or when they feel lethargic.

Responses vary, so trial this well before an important race. It should support the warm-up, not replace movement, drills or progressive running.

Use Appropriate Footwear

Sprinters should avoid doing every running session in heavy jogging shoes. Lightweight racing flats can be useful for some training, although athletes should introduce new footwear progressively and select a model that suits their mechanics.

Pilates and Trunk Control

Pilates is worth investigating for athletes seeking better trunk control, posture and movement awareness. It may be particularly useful when recurring hamstring or back problems affect running, although persistent pain should be assessed by a suitably experienced professional.

General Conditioning Early in the Training Year

Circuit training and suitable group strength classes can provide general conditioning early in the year. This foundation can precede a later emphasis on maximum strength in the gym.

The work should still suit the athlete’s event and development. A conditioning session that creates excessive fatigue can interfere with important running or technical sessions.

Include Plyometric Training

Athletes in every track event can benefit from suitable plyometric work. It can improve the ability to use elastic energy, supporting power, speed and running efficiency.

Start with low-intensity exercises and gradually increase the demand. Distance athletes often neglect this area, but the volume must remain compatible with their running. See our plyometric training guide and video demonstrations.

Understand Carbohydrate Timing

Choose Experienced Medical Support

Use medical and allied-health professionals who understand serious athletes and the demands of training. Treatment approaches can vary considerably, so convenience should not be the only factor when an injury may affect the athlete’s future participation.

Protect Sleep and Adaptation

Sleep is when much of the adaptation to training occurs. Establish a consistent waking time and aim for about nine hours of sleep when training demands are high.

After an occasional late night, get up at the normal time, consider a short afternoon nap of about 30 minutes and return to an earlier bedtime. Consistency is more useful than repeatedly changing the sleep schedule.

Should a new race-day idea be tested at an important competition?

No. Trial changes to footwear, warm-up routines, cold-water exposure or nutrition during training first. The athlete and coach should know how the individual responds before using the method at an important event.

Do distance runners need plyometrics?

They can benefit from appropriately selected plyometrics because elastic strength contributes to running efficiency and speed. Begin with low intensity and keep the volume compatible with the athlete’s running workload.

Are heavy jogging shoes suitable for sprint training?

They are not ideal for every session. Sprinters may use lighter flats for some faster running, but footwear changes should be progressive and should suit the athlete’s mechanics and training surface.

Why does medical experience with athletes matter?

A practitioner familiar with serious training is more likely to understand the loads, movement demands and return-to-running decisions involved. Persistent pain or injury requires individual professional assessment.

What is the most important recovery habit?

Consistent sleep is fundamental. Training only produces improvement when the athlete can recover and adapt, so bedtime, waking time and total sleep should be treated as part of the program.
